This is a real picture postcard view of High Bridge near Thurmont. The current High Bridge still stands in the spot where this one carried the Western Maryland Railway over Owens Creek. The card is dated Oct. 20, 1908 and was mailed from Thurmont to Miss Carrie Clem, 5344 W. Washington Street, Hagerstown, MD.

I think this is a C. R. R. Beck view of the bridge, it is similar to others he took during the time period. The bridge appears to be of timber construction but if you look closely you can see a steel beam framework. In other views the steel framework can be seen by it's self so this may have been a transition from wood construction to steel. Also note that the road is nothing more than a dirt track. It would be several years after this before a committee was formed to improve the road to Lantz. Originally the road crossed back and forth over Owens Creek several times but the new road cut the crossings to a minimum. There is a message on the back of the card that finishes up on the front.

The front of the card has the photo of High Bridge and a hand written note on the margin. The note reads "High Bridge - Thurmont Md. and just make up your mind to come across this and spend Thanksgiving with me."
The line of text is actually the end of the note on the back of the card. It seems that Carrie may have been reluctant to take the train from Hagerstown to Thurmont for a fear of crossing High Bridge.
