The Catoctin Enterprise of May 31, 1968, featured this photograph of the interior of Saylor Weybright's grocery store on Water Street. The building originally served as the Moravian Church and after Weybright owned it went on to be the Gall - Smith Store, the American grocery store and for a brief time, Teen Town, before becoming the Thurmont Libary in 1968. This picture was taken in 1930-1931 and shows Saylor Weybright at the right and Lee Martin on the left. When Saylor Weybright purchased this building he added the basement under the building and the second floor. As originally built as the Moravian Church the interior was a large open space from the floor to the ceiling under the rafters. The second floor was suspended inside the building hanging from the from the rafters by long wrought iron bolts. Today, architectural details from over one hundred years ago during the time of the Moravian Church can still be seen on the second floor.
The caption reads: This is an early view of the inside of the grocery store on Water St. that is being renovated for the Thurmont Public Library. The picture was taken in the early 1930"s when D. S. Weybright was the owner of the store. Standing there ready to wait on the customers are Mr. Weybright (r) and the late Lee Martin. Note the tins of cookies and bunches of bananas in the foreground.
