This telephone book cover is from 1958 and features advertisements and emergency phone numbers for both Thurmont and Emmitsburg. These covers were a very popular form of advertising when phone books were still in daily use. The advent of cell phones and the ability to search phone numbers online has taken a toll on the use of phone books. This cover is for the earlier compact versions, in later years the phone books grew to almost double in page size and thickness.  You will note that this cover was introduced prior to the institution of the 911 Emergency Service.

The companies advertising were Matthews Gas (Emmitsburg & Thurmont), Sperry's Garage (Emmitsburg), Schildt Construction (Thurmont), Willow Farms Dairy (Frizzelburg), Emmitsburg Feed and Farm Supply (Emmitsburg), Charles F. Stouter Petrolium Products (Emmitsburg), M. L. Creager & Son Funeral Home (Thurmont) and Flohr Lumber & Supply (Blue Ridge Summit).

I believe all of these copanies have closed as of 2020, with one or two operating under different ownership and name.
