This is the text of the petition.

"To the Honorable, Senate and House of Delegates of the State of Maryland, in Legislature assembled.
The undersigned petitioners, representing a majority of the Residents and Tax-payers of the incorporated Town of Mechanicstown, Frederick County, Maryland, pray your Honorable body, to change by Legislative enactment the name of Mechanicstown, to that of Thurmont and they, your petitioners fully believe that such action on your part, would be conductive to the best interests of the Town of Mechanicstown, and in complete accord with the will of the majority of it's Citizens."
