Monocacy Valley Railroad Letterhead 001 JAK : This document dated April 4, 1900 was penned by L. Randolph Waesche, Superintendent of the Monocacy Valley Railroad Company. The MVRR was established prior to the Hagerstown and Frederick, and the Washington, Frederick and Gettysburg lines. A third railroad named the Frederick, Thurmont and Northern Railroad was incorporated but never operated. The line was constructed in 1886 to carry supplies to and finished goods from the Catoctin Furnace to the Western Maryland connection at Thurmont. Mule teams pulled the cars until 1898 when the first of three steam engines was purchased to operate on the line. The President of the line was Dr. Steiner Schley of Frederick and L. Randolph Waesche served as Superintendent. This is the only artifact I have seen of the MVRR other than a couple of photographs of the engine at Thurmont and the furnace. The MVRR was incorporated into the Frederick Railroad in December 1907 and the line electrified in 1910. The Frederick Railroad eventually became the Hagerstown and Frederick Railroad.
