This photo is from the April 29, 1971 edition of The News, Frederick , Maryland. This paper had an entire page titled 'Faces Out Of The Past Of Sabillasville Area' featuring eight photographs of schools kids from Sabillasville and Deerfield as well as two pictures of Scouts all from the early 1890's - 1930's. I will be posting all eight photos over the next few days.

This particular photo is of the students at the Deerfield School in 1896. The photo was provided to the paper by and the children identified by Hugh Eby of Thurmont. Mr. Eby owned the shoe repair shop on Water Street in Thurmont for many years. Many will remember going into his shop to drop off shoes to be repaired. Interestingly Hugh Eby is also in the photograph! He is the last kid at the right in the second row wearing a dark jacket. I hope Larry Eby can confirm that this is indeed his grandfather Hugh Eby. There are many familiar family names in the caption including Charles Shields, who I think owned Shields Store in Sabillasville.

This newspaper was given to me by Steve Woelfel. It is neat to see these old photos and I thank Steve for sharing this great page of photos with us.
