This is a deed for burial spaces in the United Brethren Church in Christ, known as the Weller Church at 'Mechanicstown, in the County of Frederick and State of Maryland'. The deed is dated July 8, 1867 and names Joseph E. Kuhn as the owner of one half of Lot 27 measuring eight feet by eight feet. Mr. Kuhn paid $5.00 for the grave lot and was given 'free access to and from the same, and subject to his own control and fancy in beautifying the same by Trees, Shrubbery, enclosure or otherwise'. The deed is signed by George Stokes, Jacob Perry and James Baltzell, trustess of the cemetery. Reuben Osler, Justice of the Peace for the State of Maryland witnessed the signing of the deed.
This deed is one of the documents Col. John R. Rouzer was holding to the family of John B. Gilbert. Even though the deed is 153 years old it still reads very well and it remains in excellent condition.
This document is part of the Bill Zentz Collection, thanks to Candy Zentz for making it available for display.
