This article taken from the Dec. 12, 1912 edition of the Catoctin Clarion gives an accounting of a Western Maryland RR train wreck at Pen Mar on Dec. 6, 1912. The article mentions five fatalities and several injuries. Interestingly the article identifies several tramps also known as Hobos but does not indicate if they were on either of the trains. Sadly the last paragraph of the article mentions one of the injured found dangling between two of the cars requesting that his legs be cut off so he could die laying on the ground. Two trains, Engine No. 203 & 209 hit head on while crossing High Bridge just West of Thurmont. The accident was caused by a delay in one of the trains and human error. Several trainmen and passengers died in this wreck and it was quite a mess to clean up. As with many other Hicks negatives these are photos of photos. In this case the envelopes mention that the images were copied from Mr. Eyler of Thurmont in July 1968. You will see that several are actually postcard views printed by Rogers Studio located on Water Street right here in Thurmont.

Here you can see Engine No 728 and the repair train backed up to the engine on the bridge. The first engine has already been removed. One of the WMRR cranes is up against the engine setting it back on the tracks. At the bottom right you can see the Rogers Studio stamp, this was a postcard view.

The engine appears to be set back on the tracks awaiting removal from the bridge. The cars behind the engine still need to be put back on the rails. High Bridge crosses Owens Creek and Maryland Rte. 550.

Note the wooden beam construction with steel girders interspaced for strength. There have been at least three versions of High Bridge. The current bridge with steel girders and concrete columns dates from the 1950's.

In this view you can see the baggage car laying in Owens Creek. This car fell off of the bridge. This is another postcard view by Rogers Studio, see the stamp at the bottom right. These pictures were photographed from an album, you can see corner tabs on several of the photos.

This photo of the WMRR wreck at High Bridge appeared in the July 1, 1915 edition of the Catoctin Clarion. It was credited to a photographer from the Frederick Daily News. The photo was taken on the morning of June 25, 1915 from the South West side of the bridge.

A gentleman looking down toward the fallen baggage car. This wreck attracted a lot of attention, there are views showing groups of people milling about. 

This view of a wreck on the Western Maryland was taken from one of W. R. Hicks negatives. The wreck involved two trains, Train No.601 a work extra headed East with Engine No. 601 and Train No. 301 a local freight being pulled by Engine No. 313. They collided 3/4 of a mile West of Westminster on July 13, 1912. In this view you can see one of the engines off the track with the tender pancaked into the rear of the engine. This is probably a photo of a postcard view.
