Here is a card from a social event by the High School Alumni from 1905. On the front are two photos of Thurmont Schools, and the back features the menu. The card is handmade with a gold-painted border, handwritten text, and two photographs pasted in the corners. The newspaper clipping mentions the menu cards.

The front of the card features a hand-painted gold border and handwritten text. The photos were pasted in the corners. The Alumni reunion was held on June 19, 1905, at the Old Town Hall on North Church Street. Graduations, plays, movies, parties, meetings, etc., were held in the large room at the Town Hall.

The photo at the top left shows the IOOF building on East Main Street. The first floor of the building served as the Mechanicstown School for several years. This was included because, in 1905, many of the alumni would have attended school in this building.

The back of the card has a handwritten menu for the event. The alumni were served Ices, Cake, Fruit, and Candy. Be sure to read the newspaper clippings to read about the reunion and who was in attendance.

At the bottom right-hand corner is a photograph of the first purpose-built school in Thurmont. This building was located at 204 East Main Street. It served as the school until a newer building was built three doors further down the street. The building survived for many years and was incorporated into the Claire Frock facility. It was removed and replaced by the parking lot on the property next to the Goodwill building.

This is a photo of Sue Eyler Clabaugh and Davey Late standing on the playground behind Thurmont High School in 1957. The boy behind them is identified as Jim Miller. Sue still lives in Thurmont and is married to Larry Clabaugh. If you knew Dave you would recognize the smirk on his face. He considered himself a real lady killer and he looks happy to be standing next to Sue. Dave's father owned the Late Meat Market on Howard Street and he opened Davey's Diner on Water Street to give Dave something to do. Davey's Diner is still there and with massive changes, it is now the Thurmont Kountry Kitchen. Dave worked for many years at the Cannon Shoe Company and Royer's restaurant before moving to New England. He was also involved in the Thurmont Community Ambulance Service and I believe he was the first trained EMT in Thurmont. Thanks to Sue for sharing this gem with us!

Chief Greg Eyler and I visited the Thurmont Elementary School on Friday morning, Aug. 20, 2021 to attend the Flag Raising Ceremony. We had a great time seeing all the students and enjoyed our visit immensely. On the way out Principal Karl Williams invited us to his office to show us something of interest he found. He asked if we had attended TES and if either of us had Mrs. Betty Willard as a teacher. Both of us had Mr. Willard, then he asked if either of us were in her class in 1962.  I was in Mrs. WIllard's class in 1962! He pulled out this booklet from when I was in Mrs. Willard's third-grade class in 1962! I had a quick look through it and asked if I could scan it to share with others.

So thanks to Mr. Karl Williams here is the booklet 'History of our Community' created by Mrs. Willard's third-grade class in May of 1962. There are 20 pages, each one is displayed individually. Here we see the booklet in a clear plastic cover, over the years several pages came loose but they are all there. The booklet was used in the Library and at the end is a page showing the names of students that used the book while it was in the TES Library.

You will probably recognize many of the names on the check-out card. Note that this booklet was issued a Dewey Decimal System Number, who remembers looking through the Index Card Files in the Library to find a book? This booklet was created by the students in Mrs. Betty Willard's third-grade TES class in 1962. Each page includes the name or names of the students that helped with the page.
