This is the first of four sheets in the set of maps. This shows the extent of the Town of Thurmont in
1913. The areas numbered 2,3, and 4 indicate the areas included in the following maps.

The maps were created by the Maryland State Department of Health Bureau of Sanitary Engineering and are dated March 10, 1913. They are signed by Robert B. Morse, Chief of the Bureau. There are several sanitary installations in Maryland named after Mr. Morse.

Showing the general map. At this time Thurmont extended from West Main Street past Altamont to Walnut Street and from the Western Maryland Railway to the Water Street and Frederick Road intersection. There were other houses located past these points but the map was targeting properties that had water service.

The second map shows from the South side of East and West Main Streets down to the Water Street and Frederick Road intersection.

This is the key to the items identified on the map. Houses and businesses that have been connected to the Water Supply are highlighted in Yellow. You will see that the vast majority of structures have been connected to public water by 1913. You will also see that almost every property also shows a privy or cesspool.

This section shows the East side of West Main and a portion of Water Street at the lower right. The Square is at the top right and you can see the Bank building identified on the Square. Right next to the bank it shows the Post Office. The Post Office shared the bank building and was there for many years before moving to the Masonic Building at 12 East Main Street.

These are the properties on the South side of East Main Street down to about where Stauffer's Funeral Home is located today. Water Street is at the left.

This is Water Street and the beginning of Frederick Road. At the bottom left you can see the Citizens Electric Light & Power Company. The Food Bank and Thurmont Public Works are located at this site today. The Electric company had a building with electric generator sets powered by water from the Electric Dam. The original roofline can still be seen on the building.

At the center of this portion of Water Street is a property identified by the number 338 This is were Mr. Eby's Shoe shop would be located. Note that the privy at the rear of the property is marked as being filthy. Larry Eby mentioned Bill Zentz showing him this map many years a go and noted that his grandfathers privy was identified as being filthy.

This is the third map featuring the the North side of East Main Street form Trinity Church East to Lombard Street. the Hagerstown and Frederick Railway line starts at the bottom left and curves to meet the Western Maryland Railway at the top center of the map. Carroll Street is seen at the left center going from top to bottom. There are many houses on Carroll a this time but fewer on Lombard and Walnut.
