This album contains photographs of what may be the only surviving can produced by the John Root & Son Canning factory of Mechanicstown, MD. The Roots were in business prior to the 1894 change in or town's name from Mechanicstown to Thurmont. John Root & Sons operated at the Altamont Avenue crossing of the Western Maryland Rail Road and were the predecessors of all the later canning factories at that location. The Roots also operated a general merchandise, advertisements of which are included here as well. My thanks to Sam Tressler for allowing me to photograph this amazing can!
